I shot this last week and have puzzled over why I don't think it works. I've come to the conclusion that insufficient care over small details has altered the impact of the image. I think that before taking the image I should have cleared the set of any rubbish and debris, and anything distracting like the plastic plant name tags should have been removed. From then its a case of retouching out parts of the photo to clear it up, not so its imaculate but so its minimal and balanced.

This was my third attempt, this time shot at dusk, there's just a little more detail and it seems to make all the difference, subtle though it is.

This was my second attempt on another day, I got all my exposures but then decided I didn't like the image anyway. I took out the tree all together in post because retouching the bramches would have been disaster.

This was my first attempt, annoyingly the back drops weren't tall enough to go up behind the tree so it meant having to retouch it in. Watersprinklers also came on and I got soaked. I gave up.

As a voyeur of faith within America's Bible Belt, and person who does not follow a particular religious movement, my project explores an influential subject synonymous with Texas. Assuming a position echoing my personal detachment to the church I utilise the first point of contact, the road sign as a visual aid into this other world............ blah blah blah.

I had originally thought I was happy with this image, but I'm now thinking that I should consider shooting a little earlier in the evening and catching twlight. I'm doing long exposures to get detail throughout the images but some of the colour casts and shadows are still too deep. The images might benefit from having a bit more of fill and twilight would help with this.

I feel I need to work on making the conceptual side of this project stronger, does anyone have any reading thay might suggest?

This is the statement i gave to a call for submissions but i thought i would include it anyway... sorry the images are a bit small.

I have been exploring the resurgence of beauty or visual pleasure in art under the following assumption:

It is difficult for contemporary art practice to retreat from the materiality of an artwork. To put forward beauty as an aesthetic device representing the authentic, the artwork is able to direct the viewer beyond the familiar towards the magnificent. Photography demands that we accept the materiality of an artwork as a result of the universality of the medium; there is also the acknowledgement of the route from subject to art object.

These images explore the potential of photography as a platform for the magnificent whilst, at the same time, scrutinising issues surrounding authenticity and the subjective that are specific to the medium.

By inverting the image in post-production I am highlighting the relationship between viewer and author –the Duchampian idea that the viewer completes the image; as well as ‘subverting’ the notion of beauty as truth.

Using flowers as the subject make art historical references to beauty and I have used tinted light sources to try to suggest a conflict between the formal use of colour in more traditional art forms such as painting and the documentary photographer’s view that colour represents fiction.

It is the intention that these are large images within a gallery space with only a blurred distinction between beauty and vulgarity. The viewer initially contemplates the scale and only when they step back are they offered the space to consider that there is something ‘not quite right’ with the image.

The work is an acceptance of the failure of photography as an authentic medium and the potential for beauty as a critical rather than simply formal device.

All the equipment has turned up so I can start shooting. I got a map and plotted all the churches in Frisco (40), and all the churches in Plano (72). The last couple of nights I drove around and looked at all the ones in Frisco, just a few had lights out the front so I did another test. It was too windy for the backdrops so I'll have to wait for a calm evening, but I played around with ways to stop car headlights on long exposures instead.

When my nan died my mum and uncle cleared out her council flat she'd lived in most of her life so someone else could move in. I often wonder who lives there now.

My uncle handed me this old 120 film to process (half the size of 35mm) that he had found in her cupboard. I got them processed a while ago but it was hard to see anything on them. Today I sat down and scanned them and a weird convergence of time brought me to tears. As the images taken by her back in the 80's of the family appeared on the screen I felt like she was with me in the present. One of MY memories seen through HER eyes for the first time.

Last night sirens that sounded like WWII air-raid warnings started up in Frisco and across Dallas, we turned on the TV and checked the weather. There were storms and a possible tornado heading right our way.......it went instantly dark outside, wind picked up and lightning started. As we moved to sit in the bathroom where there were no windows, trees began falling and then there was a loud banging. When Rach opened the door it was like out of a movie, all you could see was debris flying and a woman was screaming to come in. She had seen the tornado in the distance and ditched her truck as it was starting to lift off the road. All three of us waited in the bathroom, power was out and a tree came down on the house just above us. Five minutes later it was over, the storm passed and the sky went an atomic orange at sunset.

I managed to get hold of the 'timer controller' so was able to do my first extended exposure, also a friend luckily had master stands, rail and blackout so I have been able to borrow those. All I need now are some sand bags and I can get shooting properly. Unfortunately it was quite windy tonight so the grass is blurred in the image.

I shot my second test tonight at another location. The technical side to this is more of an issue than I imagined and I have had to order new equipment. Basically I have to maximise the image output from the 5D so............

*Noise reduction has been introduced
*Sensor cleaning kit bought
*ISO expansion has been increased to 50
*Purchased a TC-80n3 timer remote controller

It means now I can go futher than the 30 seconds without my hand on the Bulb setting, this will reduce camera shake, allow me to increase aperture and gain greater detail in the shadow areas.

For ages I've wanted to photograph the churches in Texas. When I first visited America a couple of years ago I never came up with a clear way of representing them, and it was frustrating. I've revisited the idea from a new angle by considering what stands out to me a photographer in this State...........

* The huge number of churches
* The use of lighting, in particulr neon and fluorescents
* The particular choice of plants around buildings and structures.

With this in mind I have decided to photograph the pillars at the front of churches which carry their name. Rather than showing the signage I've opted for a side on view and decided to black out the backgrounds. This is the first test which I'm going to elaborate upon, I'm really happy with the results and think I can develop it into a strong project with a few alterations. The image seems to carry the emotion that I'm trying to place into my photographic series. Below are some images which I think may have helped inspire me.

I shot this ealier today, I liked the ambiguousness of the image. It's hard to date because of the obscure architecture......... 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's? There's something about this structure that works and I've been trying to get this with other images, it's not easy though. It's about striking a balance with basic lighting but also finding the correct location, also at the moment I'm liking the mid-day/ afternoon sun, but the heats horriffic.

Here are some images from a current project I'm working on. The notion of ownership is a complex one that I think is changing at an accelerated rate right now. This archive holds ideas that date back to the 1700's and 3 years ago they stopped the process of collecting paperwork to validate and protect ideas. This place represents our desire/need to make the intangible (the thought/idea) tangible to validate it. It's now exists as part of our cultural history as we accept the intangible (digital) as proof in this age of information. A full cycle....

I went on my first road trip, a 5-6 hour drive down to an island past Houston called Galveston. It's a seaside town that's in semi ruin due of various hurricanes over the years, but has loads of character. I couldn't really take pics because it was supposed to be a break not a shoot.......... but sneaked a few in.

I've been looking to find a baseball pitch to photograph and came across this run down seating. I just lit the undergrowth to try and bring attention to an area people would normally overlook.

I completely screwed this up and should have shot from the other side which had a church showing.

I walked a mile down stream with Rach and Calib until we stopped at a bridge. I got got this shot from a steep bank whilst I fried in the afternoon sun. The light is really different here, it can make objects look beautifully clean, it becomes possible to understand how some American photographers are able to achieve the qualities they do in their imagery.

I'm just starting to think about subjects to shoot whilst in Texas. It's so different from the UK and because of this there seems to be limitless things to pursue, vast landscapes, beautiful light, city scapes, lifestyle..... etc etc. I'm still battling the 5D as I don't like 35mm as a format but I have to use what is available, and that's all I have. I'm considering looking at the more mandane, backs of gardens, outside of houses and simplying lighting them with flash to bring out detail. Here's an example where a stream has been light in order to accentuate the water to give a slightly clinical quality.

I've been working for weeks trying to put ideas together for a project and don't seem to be making much progress. I'm looking to concentrate the emotion in my imagery through the use of simple backgrounds, and keep coming back to the possibility of cloud formations to enhance mood. Although this portrait wasn't shot specifically for the sky, it does give a rough idea of what I'm trying to achieve...... (I just don't think this is working at all).

Based on psychologist Oliver James's definition of affleunza as 'a painful, contagious, socially transmitted condition of overload, debt, anxiety and waste resulting from the dogged pursuit of more', this timely exhibition (held in a temporary gallery space in Farringdon) features work by 30 multidisciplinary artists, plus a series of talks on subjects such as 'How to de-brand your life'. The exhibition is the brainchild of photographer and Samaritans volunteer Hege Sæbjørnsen, who reached burn-out in 2007 due to excessive working and other challenging life events. The Samaritans will work with teens aged 15 to 19 on ten seminars exploring the significance of the artworks.

I was looking at Source yesterday and found some really relevant articles in this issue.

The conversation that Stacey and i were having about my rose pictures sort of relates to Sarah Lynch's work here as well as Tim Edgar's in terms of a move away from the political subject and towards a discussion of the aesthetics of the photographic medium.

The things i have been thinking about are ideas to do with beauty (a dirty word alongside criticality), photography as evidence or exploratory by nature and the 'mirror' to speak about the comparative elements of photography.

This exploration of 'medium specificity' has little to do with Postmodernism and signifies a return to more Modernist values which also relates to my research into wider cultural discussions in the Middle East. ie. Does the 'classical' era in somewhere like Dubai begin with Postmodernism in the 1960's and beyond and if so, can art histories be applied to contemporary art practice to help to reconcile the gulf between a society undergoing rapid modernisation with a culture rooted in tradition. Last weekend Sarah downloaded Radioheads 'in rainbows' album that they released last year asking people to pay what they thought it was worth.

I can't stop listening to it.

Reckoner which is number 7 (I think) blows me away.
For me, this is what great art is about. Taking the way you feel about your experience of life and connecting with yourself on such an intuitively brilliant level that you produce something so fine tuned, focused and accurate that it becomes a meditation - a mental discipline where you attempt to go beyond the reflexive, "thinking" mind into a deeper state of awareness.
I think music gives it's audience the ability to be taken incredibly close to the space the artist occupies when they do this. A quality the visual arts should be quite jealous of...

Here's an update.
The group didn't meet on Sunday because Sarah and Stacey just buggered up the weekend by getting drunk for most of it.
Sunday was about pyjamas, takeaway, lying on the sofa in a star position and on the bed in a face down star position, not washing, moaning about headaches and drinking tonnes of tea, getting rubs and watching tele. So Sorry devoted art ones. Lets meet on Wednesday instead?

The score 'Music from Russian Liturgy of the Good Saturday', sung by Choirs of the Cathedral of St Alexandre Newski, is an amazing piece of work. I have tirelessly watched La Jetee and the point at which the museum of past is explored has always fascinated me, the combination of soundtrack (composed by Trevor Duncan) and image manages to capture a particularity unusual collection of emotions.

I've always admired Eric Fischls 'Krefeld Project' and understood it to share a similarity with this point in the film. In his paintings, based upon a series of photos he took of two actors hired to interact within a domestic environment, he constructs and directs a relationship.
Although the images above depict an individual alone, a similar process has occurred which to some extent involves these works. Using a smaller format and a less structured photographic approach than normally I might apply, images have quickly been brought together from a day out. A balance of chance and instinct has informed the production, with ideas being rapidly explored and emotions unforced rather than constructed.

This morning I went swimming and swam 50 lengths of a 33 metre pool. I have been teaching myself for the past month how to swim freestyle as I had never been able to before and primarily because my left foot is out of action for any rigorous training at the moment. I need to get fit fast and swimming freestyle is a great alternative to running which is one of my sporting strenghts. I first started learning the breathing element, stopping and starting in the pool for a few days until I had it mastered. Then I started swimming half a lenght freestyle, finishing it with breaststroke with a subsequent full breaststroke lenght, then back to the half lenght freestyle and so on until I managed 50 lenghts. One and a half breaststroke and a half freestyle was what I was managing.

Recently I have been swimming one lenght freestyle and one breaststroke and so until again, I manage 50 lenghts. I would tire at the end of the freestyle lenght and use the breaststroke to catch my breath on the way back. This morning I was tired and and felt that I was going to retire from my morning's swim 20 lenghts short of 50. I rested after 30 for 5 mins and then decided I'd persevere until my arms gave up. I again started with a freestyle. During my 31st lenght I decided that I would do my 32nd lenght freestyle too. My 32nd lenght was surprisingly a breeze so I decided to go to 35 lenghts with the same stroke. However, at 35 lenghts my arms were fine and my breathing was steady so I continued on to 40 lenghts freestyle. But 40 lenghts was still no bother and on I went and completed my 50 lenghts with the remaining 20 in non stop freestyle fluency.

I learnt something very valuable today. You see, I have always swam breaststroke since I learned how to swim when I was 12. To me the idea of learning how to swim freestyle just seemed far too difficult and beyond my swimming confidence. When I took a break from running I would swim breaststroke at a breeze, spending double the time getting fit whilst burning half the calories that the freestyle stroke could have allowed me. Plus, I have always been quite good at other sports that would allow me to get fit, but as my foot is out of limits at the moment, I needed to find an alternative. So there I was walking home from the pool this morning realising that something I had put off and not bothered with for 16 years I had overcome and proved significantly good at within a month of hard work. I have also relied so much on my running abililty to get fit too that I never really saw the need to learn to swim well. I could have been the Irish Rebecca Adlington had I tried sooner or explored other avenues! Being the Irish Rebecca Adlington however was not something that I wanted but todays experience of overcoming a feat that my own procrastination, lack of self belief, reliance only on my strenghts and not exploring other avenues will prove utterly vital to my own personal development. You see the thing is, if I was good at other sports I was probably more that likely going to be good at swimming too!

Our group has been a great success this year, friendships can really help unlock creativity, testimony to this is a film by Lars Von Trier + Jorgen Leth, 'The Five Obstructions'. If you haven't seen this then its a must........

Lars Von Trier challenges his mentor and good friend, Jorgen Leth to remake a film of his called 'The Perfect Human' in five new ways. Leth has suffered from depression and also to a degree a loss of style which Von Trier looks to remedy. Through the inclusion of strict and thoughful rules governing the production of this film, Leths filmic approach is systematically targeted so that he's forced to create and think in new ways. The result is a gift from Von Trier to his Leth, enabling a return to form that's realised through sensitive observations only a close friend could make.

It made me think about how we can imagine a family through photography. For years I was convinced that a photograph hung in my Aunt's house was a portrait of my Grandmother who had died before I was born. I was weird when I found out it was my Great-Grandmother. Should have bought this picture sat outside a shop on Portobello Road.
She looks great without a head. I think it's because I know what to imagine in the gap. It also gives you license to look at her jewelery and study her hands.
She belongs in the Royal Borough.

Speaking of vaseline, I attended 'In conversation with Andres Serrano' on Thursday night. Thoroughly enjoyed his company, humour, and work.

I find vaseline tins to be like lighters.
You either have unusual amounts of them lying around or you can't find one at all.
I think it's got something to do with scale.
